This is great advise I am going to pass it along to my teachers at my school. I have only been able to attend one conference this year and oh how I wish I had gone by myself. The other teacher took the free drinks, as many as she could and still drive. Everybody was advoiding us the next two days. From now on it is solo or with someone who appreciates the time away from the workplace. Thanks.

[...] Yes, there is value in applications like these. Catching the right flight, finding out where the good presentations and parties are at, orchestrating an introduction to cool folks, or keeping abreast of the London tube schedule. But these applications use such technologies as a tool to accomplish something that otherwise wouldn’t have been do-able, or that would have been harder to get done. Isn’t that the true value of software and web apps? [...]

Those are useful tips. In addition to the first: when you do not fly solo, try to hook up solo with (new) people before the event. (FOWA online connection lounge helped me a lot there) These engagements will prevent you to clinging on to each other. (Connect with me on Twitter if anyone wants to hook up for drinks/dinner during @media 2007 in London.)

Leisa, some great ideas!
How about:
- Eat/drink with people, during breaks and after workshops.
- Don't take every single course you can. Pick and Choose carefully.
- Do some homework on the speakers before attending their workshops. This again, will help make choices.

-Brad (in sunny long beach, ca).

LOL @ Dan Brown. No, this wasn't about you! (Although, I do have to admit that I went to your session in the hope that I wouldn't have to read your book for the upcoming London IA Bookclub, but ended up being engrossed in it on the plane ride home afterall!).

Also, what Amy said re: taking breaks. I ended up doing this accidentally - when engrossed in conversations, sessions started with out me knowing. It was a shame to miss the sessions, but would have been even more a shame to miss the conversations, which definitely won't be podcast!

Excellent advice, which I followed without even having read your blog post. :-) I made a point of going to sessions that covered things I was unfamiliar with, and even a few that I wasn't positive I was interested in. I did go to a couple of "celebrity" sessions, but only because I was especially interested in the topics. It all worked out very well. Volunteering at the IAI booth was also a great opportunity to have impromptu "big ideas" conversations, which was an unexpected bonus.

Another bit of advice that I'd offer: take breaks and skip a few sessions. This prevents your brain from exploding, but it also gives you a chance to talk to people or just wander around and listen to what others are talking about in the hallways. There were one or two sessions that I wished I hadn't skipped, but the downtime was good for me in the end.

Ouch. #3 isn't about me, is it? Something about writing a book does make it seem like you're a one-trick pony...

I used to do that all the time Virginia. In fact, sometimes I still can't resist doing it. It almost often proves to be a mistake though, and that's anecdotally true for lots of other people I've spoken to at conferences also!
